1. Water leak or burst water pipe
> It is a good idea to know the location of your water meter incase there is an emergency and you need to turn off the water supply. Generally your water meter is located at the front of your boundary either on the left or right side of block. Most water meters have a leak indicator to check for any leaks, this can be located to the right of the digits.
To turn off your water supply at the water meter just turn the valve in the clockwise direction - note: most older water meters require a tool to isolate the water, most can be turned off with a shifter or multigrips.
2. Braided water hose
> A braided water hose or flexi hose is commonly recommended by manufactures to be replaced every 5 years to prevent your home being flooded by a burst hose. These hoses are easily identified since they're on just about every mixer tap and connect to the base of the mixer. The outer part of hose is wrapped in a metal braided material to protect the internal rubber hose from ware and damage.
Things to look out for when inspecting the condition of flexi hoses are, check for any rust spots forming along braid and make sure the hose is free from any kinks or twists. Flexi hoses are one of the main causes a home gets water damage or flooded, it is crucial to inspect flexi hoses periodically.
3. Washing machine water hoses
> Most washing machines come with rubber water hoses. Inspect the condition of each water hose for signs of ware if the machine is a couple of years old. Rule of thumb is recommended to replace them every 3-5 years to prevent a burst water hose.
4. Toilet running water
> Water will constantly be running into the toilet bowl because of 1 of 2 reasons.
1. The water inlet valve (float valve) in the cistern isn't shutting off causing water to fill up in the cistern and to flow out the overflow tube. The water inlet valve may need to servicing or be replaced.
2. The flush valve mechanism could have a warn/perished seat rubber that isn't sealing and not allowing the water to hold in the cistern causing water to run into the toilet bowl.
5. Storage hot water system
> Get the most life out of your hot water storage system. Manufactures recommend slowly opening the Temperature and Pressure Relief valve (TPR valve) for a few seconds once every 6 months to prevent the TPR valve from failing and causing the hot water heater to split or worse yet, explode.
- Note, take care when opening the TPR valve due to the scalding hot water that will flow directly from the hot water heater and flow out the pipe once TPR valve is being opened. Stand clear and make sure no one is near the TPR valve outlet pipe when opening valve.
6. Gas hot water storage unit
> Have a gas hot water storage unit and the water has gone cold?
Check that the gas pilot light hasn't gone out, most models will require the panel at the bottom of unit be removed to be able to see the pilot light burning. If the pilot light has gone out (most commonly happens on strong windy days) you can follow the manufactures igniting instructions that are most of the time on the inside of the removable panel.
If you don't feel confident in lighting the gas pilot light don't hesitate to call a gas plumber.
7. Roof gutter overflows
> Have your roof gutters checked and cleaned out either annually or more frequent depending on your proximity to bushland. This will prevent build up of leaves that can cause rain water to back up during a rain event and flooding your home through the eaves that can lead into the ceiling space.
